A Bit of Dr Mark Ralfe's Bio

Welcome.  I am an Adelaide-based Sports Medicine doctor.  Having obtained my degree from New Zealand's oldest medical school, Otago University, I worked in NSW at the John Hunter Hospital, Newcastle Orthopaedic Hospital and Tamworth Base Hospital.  I came to South Australia to complete my Postgraduate Diploma in Obstetrics (DRANZCOG) under Professor Pridmore at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and the next year at the Women and Children's Hospital, I obtained the Diploma of Child Health (DCH). Over the next two years, I finished my rural GP training before sending another year locuming as a country doctor.  I spent the next few years combining Sports Medicine with General practice before fully committing to Sports Medicine from 2013. Along the way, I completed a Certificate of Sports Medicine under Dr Brian Sando at Sports Medicine Australia SA, a full year studying a certificate of Emergency Medicine, the international EMST course for treating severe trauma and an Advanced Certificate in Clinical Hypnosis under Dr Alan Fahey, head of the Australian College of Hypnosis. In 2015, I joined the Wakefield Sports Medicine clinic in Adelaide's CBD, and in 2019, I passed the Part 1 Fellowship of the Australian Medical Acupuncture College.

I enjoy helping people of all ages and abilities get back to exercise.  Walking, jogging, playing footy, or dancing- it all counts as important. I see many knee injuries, ankle injuries, shoulder and hip problems.  I also have an interest in paediatric injuries, having obtained my postgraduate diploma in child health and spent six months in the emergency room at the Women and Children's Hospital.

Over the years I've been the Port Adelaide Football Club Magpies doctor for 11 years, been the AFL GWS Giants  Adelaide Based doctor for five years, worked with Cricket Australia being the Under 19 World Cup doctor in the UAE with Greg Chappell as the Manager. Since 2020, I have helped as an assistant doctor at Adelaide United under Dr James Ilich. I have a special interest in using platelet-rich plasma and hyaluronic acid to treat osteoarthritis and tendon problems.

In 2023, I was one of three GPs on the Australia New Zealand Concussion Guidelines committee and am involved with the research leads in developing tools for implementing the guidelines.

In 2024, I was appointed as a GP representative to the AMA SA Committee of GPs and, in 2025, the AMA SA State Council.

I  very much look forward to helping you and your family.
